It’s pretty awesome when a project that you produce finally comes to fruition! This past weekend, I directed and produced my very first fashion show at Clark- Atlanta University, the “Cute, But Covered” fashion show! Three months ago, I began to look for young women who could model some of my fashion designs from Chanel Rose’s Closet. My friend Angela, who is a residential director at Clark-Atlanta University, introduced me to about seven awesome young ladies who were students who all wanted to be a part of my vision. Once we began having practice, the word got out about my search for models. Those seven young women knew a few more women from Clark-Atlanta and Spelman who wanted to be a part! The show took place at Clark-Atlanta University, in a courtyard outside of a dorm building. Fifteen young ladies modeled my clothes. When I saw those women modeling my designs up and down the runway, tears came into my eyes. Needless to say, I never thought I would ever live to see the day that my designs would be modeled!
What is the “Cute, But Covered” fashion show?
When I was a junior in high school, I began to notice that many of the girls in my neighborhood would dress provocatively in order to get attention from some of the older boys. They would wear skimpy shorts and tight shirts that would reveal their cleavage. Sometimes, they would make fun of me because I would not dress like them. At first, I thought that maybe I should give it a try until I realized that is not the correct way to get positive attention from a young man. I realized that dressing in clothes that revealed too much was not the Proverbs 31 woman that I learned about in my youth group at church. I was bothered by how the girl’s in my neighborhood were dressing in suggestive attire. So, I decided to do something about it! I was going to teach young women through fashion, that you do not have to show off your body in order to get attention from anyone. During the summer of my junior year, I planned out an entire fashion show production. Before the end of the summer, the entire show was laid out, and I had many designs sketched in my fashion design sketchbook. That was the easy part. The hard part was actually creating all of the designs that I wanted to be modeled. It took me a few years to sew and put together each of the outfits because I still had schoolwork to complete in preparation for graduation. However, this was one of my many dreams, and I was not going to allow anything or anyone to stop me from achieving my goal!
Four years later, I finally had all of my designs that I wanted modeled, created! Those young women from Clark-Atlanta helped to bring my vision to pass. On the day of the fashion show, I cried when I saw all of my designs being modeled up and down the red carpet. Needless to say, I never thought I would ever see my dream come to pass!
